TEST AND TALK: TECH

Replica is a new dance-theatre piece by Displace Studio and a unique audience experience that utilises immersive VR technology to display a virtual dancer alongside a live performer. You will discover how it feels when real and virtual performers interact in real time. Will technology allow us to transcend our bodies across space and time, or will we become disembodied?

All feedback is useful and will help inform the final artwork. Participants do not need any experience in VR to attend as our team will be available to support the practicalities of the technology.

The performance experience slots are for one audience member at a time and will last 15 minutes. Participants will be asked to provide detailed feedback on their experience by speaking to staff and completing a questionnaire. All feedback is useful and will help inform the final artwork. Participants are to arrive 10 minutes before their timed slot.

ABOUT DISPLACE STUDIO 

Exploring the intersection of dance, film, physical theatre and digital technology, Displace Studio produces bold, boundary-pushing, immersive experiences – often taking the form of intimate, dreamlike journeys through uncertain places rich in symbolism and metaphor in which curious behaviours are encountered. Their best-known work is an immersive VR Dance Theatre experience called Facades which toured throughout 2021-2022 to over 15 venues including 3 international festivals and 2 major UK film festivals. Displace Studio are associate artists at the Virtual and Immersive Production Studio at the University of Nottingham.

ABOUT KERRYN WISE

Kerryn is a dance artist, performer and researcher, exploring the intersection of dance, film, theatre and digital technologies. She is a QuestLab Digital Dance alumni at Studio Wayne McGregor and a Studio member at Broadway’s Arts and Technology Studio Near Now. Kerryn has been creating performance work for over 20 years and has shown her work at festivals and theatres nationally and internationally. She is a Senior Lecturer in Performing Arts at De Montfort University (DMU), Leicester and a freelance digital dance artist and producer.

ABOUT BEN NEAL

Ben Neal is the Creative Technology lead and co-founder of Displace Studio.
Ben is an Arts-focussed creative technologist, digital artist, programmer, games/gadget builder and educator with over 20 years of experience. His work often uses audio-visual and digital technology to create interactive art, bespoke electronic devices, musical instruments and immersive content such as Virtual / Augmented Reality. His work has been seen at the V&A, Somerset House and the Open Data Institute, and at festivals such as Sonar (ES), Fierce, Supersonic, Flatpack, FIVARS (US) and London Design Festival. Previous collaborators include Rachel Maclean, Abandon Normal Devices, MotionHouse and Blast Theory.
